Josh and Megan’s Secret Proposal

We recently photographed Josh and Megan’s secret proposal at the Adelaide Zoo and it was one of those moments where months of planning came together perfectly. Their story actually began long before the proposal itself. Josh and Megan grew up together in Adelaide and had known each other since they were children. Somewhere along the way their childhood friendship became something much more and they fell in love with each other and Josh was ready to propose.

Josh had since moved to Tasmania, but when he decided it was time to propose, he wanted to come back to Adelaide and create something special that Megan would remember forever.

Planning the Secret Adelaide Zoo Proposal

The plan involved Megan’s parents, the staff at the Adelaide Zoo, Josh — and us, quietly waiting with our cameras.

Megan’s parents told her that they were going to a twilight dinner at the Adelaide Zoo. Megan was told that they wouldn’t be the only people there but that others who had booked the dinner would also be there. She had no idea that Josh was in Adelaide and waiting for her around the corner near the giraffes with an engagement ring.

By the time Megan and her parents arrived, the zoo had just closed to the general public but was open to guests coming for the “twilight dinner experience”. The Adelaide Zoo staff were in on the surprise the whole time and welcomed them as though everything was completely normal. They were shown where to go for their supposed twilight experience and they began walking through the zoo towards the giraffes. Meanwhile, Josh was waiting…

As photographers, the setup was perfect. There were plenty of spots for us to wait with our cameras ready to snap the moment it all happened. When Megan saw Josh the cat was out of the bag and he took her by the hand and led her to the spot he wanted to propose. He read some words he had prepared and then he got on his knees and proposed. The Zoo staff were hidden nearby and when she said yes they all clapped and cheered. 

A Romantic Celebration — and Feeding the Giraffes

After we had a mini photo shoot Josh and Megan had a private moment about 10 meters away where there was a romantic setup with a bottle of wine and something to eat while they waited to feed the giraffes.

Feeding the Giraffes was a fun addition to the whole experience as they were able to get up close and feed them carrots while we photographed the experience. The Giraffes bent down their long necks and stretched out their long tongues to gobble up the carrots and celery sticks from Josh and Megan’s hands. They also formed a love heart as they both used their hands to offer the giraffe some carrot and celery sticks. It made for some beautiful photographs, but also plenty of fun ones. 

Then after this we left them to have their romantic dinner in the Adelaide Zoo restaurant. They had the whole restaurant to themselves and the rest is history.
