Attending a Pakistani Wedding?
Weddings are no doubt joyful occasions for any culture, celebrating the wonderful union of two people. However, as a wedding photographer, we know that a Pakistani wedding is colourful, vibrant and most times, an extravagant event. Typically, a Pakistani wedding occurs over a few days, sometimes, even as long as a week. Pakistani weddings also incorporate different customs and traditions.
Most Pakistani weddings begin with some pre-celebrations before the main celebrations. At this time, many close friends and relatives of the bride and groom will attend. Pre-celebrations, usually consist of traditional dancing and singing and can often begin weeks before the main event.
One thing that stands out at a Pakistani wedding, is the intricate henna drawings/patterns on the bride’s hands and fingers. The designs usually symbolise love, joy and luck. The henna drawings are considered to be important to the bride and are definitely a work of art.
When it comes to the ceremony, many couples do this differently. The entrance of the bride or groom can be rather elaborate, usually incorporating traditional music, drums and sometimes, even fireworks.
During the ceremony, the bride and groom make vows and promises to each other. This can also be a time where the groom gives money or gifts to his bride.
The reception is where friends and family gather to enjoy a meal and is a real celebration of the bride and groom coming together. It is generally a large celebration, with many in attendance. The set up is once again extravagant, with a gorgeous stage set up, including elegant backdrops, floral decorations and coloured lighting. The stage is used for photos of the bride and groom, as well as a place for guests to have photographs with the happy couple.
If there’s one thing we’ve realised at Pakistani weddings, it’s that there is never a shortage of food. You can expect to be fed traditional Pakistani/Indian cuisine, rich in flavours and spices. From our experience, the bride and groom, along with their families expect you to join in on the feast and welcome you at one of the tables.
Pakistani Wedding Dress
Attire is generally taken seriously and is usually very vibrant. It is bold, colourful and consists of intricate beading and embellishments, especially for the women. The bride also wears gorgeous jewellery, including necklaces and bracelets, as well as stunning head pieces. Most men, including the groom wear a suit, although at times, the groom can be seen wearing a traditional outfit too.
The large number of guests present at a Pakistani weddding, is usually indicative of their close knit, harmonious and family centred community. As photographers, we’ve experienced their hospitality first hand, which has vastly exceeded our expectations.
